NAU's Food Hive at the University Union is the campus's hub for grab-and-go dining and everyday retail, stocking hot and cold quick bites, self-serve beverages, local grocery products, produce, and campus essentials. When NAU and Sodexo redesigned the space into the Food Hive concept, they needed a checkout experience built for a much bigger store and a much bigger crowd.
Before the renovation, NAU's convenience space was cramped and underpowered, with a tightly packed assortment, restricted operating hours, and no real capacity for high volume traffic. As part of the transition to the Food Hive concept, NAU and Sodexo needed a checkout solution that could:
NAU deployed two Mashgin kiosks at the Food Hive, letting students and staff load multiple items onto the tray and check out in seconds. As Gina Rios, General Manager at Sodexo, put it: "The Mashgin units are never a problem, we like them."
The results: sales grew from $426,899.23 in 2024 to $721,592.84 in 2025, a 69% year over year increase and $294,693 in incremental revenue, while NAU extended weekend hours without straining checkout capacity.
