We use cameras to see items and computer vision to identify them. Barcodes are currently the most widely used item ID method. Barcode scanning is also a form of visual identification, but only enough to recognize the unique black-and-white bar pattern and output the associated 11-digit code. We’ll admit, it is a pretty darn cool concept to just walk out without any checkout. That said for 99% of retail, this experience doesn’t make sense and is extremely impractical and costly to execute. This type of experience requires a complete systems and hardware overhaul of your business including many new instances of camera hardware to be installed and a massive shift in how your customers shop. And that’s assuming the technology works perfectly and doesn’t require an army of representatives to review all of the footage and correct inventory and carts. Alternatively, Mashgin fits directly with how your customer shop today and with the technology and processes you already run. Not to mention, it's a fraction of the cost and much more reliable.
With the advancements of open source computer vision, it’s actually not that hard to create software to identify items in a customer’s cart with decent accuracy. That said, identifying items at high speed, at different angles, in multiple different scenarios with near perfect accuracy is extremely difficult. The secret sauce behind Mashgin is our ability to check out a full cart or order worth of items, regardless of how they are arranged and regardless of how similar they look to one another with 99.99% accuracy. While other solutions market themselves as being similar to Mashgin, when you have a line of hungry customers being 95% accurate doesn’t cut it. For example, even at 95% accuracy, manual intervention is required for at least 1 out of 20 transactions.
Across over 4 thousand customer sites using Mashgin for checkout, most saw either no change or a decrease in theft after they implemented Mashgin. Why? From our analysis a significant portion of retail theft comes from customers that are frustrated with waiting and therefore choose to steal and from internal shrink. Mashgin significantly reduces both of these causes of theft. Unlike barcode-based self-checkout, where customers must individually scan items, Mashgin identifies all items at once. This significantly reduces instances of accidental (or intentionally) missed scans. That said, the majority of theft actually does not occur in or around checkout. Therefore, whether it is Mashgin, other self checkout, or traditional manual checkout, those that plan to steal will do so no matter what.

The secret sauce of Mashgin is the insanely powerful AI and its ability to perform real-time 3d modeling to identify products with unmatched accuracy and speed. This is how Mashgin is able to differentiate items that even most humans can’t and uniquely identify many items at once, even if the tray is crowded. To deliver the very best AI, we need to use proprietary technology to power it. If someone is using a stock iPad, they aren’t running nearly as advanced of AI as Mashgin.
Mashgin estimates as much as a 400% increase in sales compared to traditional checkout options. The degree of increase varies depending on location and circumstances. For example, corporate cafeterias typically see a 20% increase, while the Denver Broncos saw a 96% faster customer throughput and saw total number of transactions per game increase by 34% at locations with Mashgin installed.
Can a customer checkout fully autonomously in most cases (exceptions include alcohol and other age restricted products) with Mashgin? Yes.
